The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati was founded in 1994 and is the sixth addition to India’s list of IITs. IIT Guwahati has 11 departments and 5 interdisciplinary academic centres in total. The government of India has designated the college as an Institute of National Importance. According to the NIRF rankings 2021, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is ranked 9th in the research category, 7th among engineering institutions, and 8th overall. In the NIRF 2020 rankings, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati was ranked seventh among engineering institutions and ninth overall.

There are 64 programmes available at the college. B.Des, M.Tech, B.Tech, M.Des, and other courses are available. University of Adelaide, Shantou University, Deakin University, NIT Manipur, CSIR, PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh, NIPER Guwahati, CSIR Hyderabad, GNRC Ltd., and others have collaborated with IIT Guwahati. The college is easily accessible by rail, road, and air. Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is approximately 22.8 kilometres from the college.
