About IIEST Shibpur
The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, formerly known as “Bengal Engineering College,” traces its origins to a college founded on November 24, 1856 in the Writers Building in Calcutta under the name “Civil Engineering College” during the nineteenth century. Since its founding in 1856, the IIEST College has been recognised for its national significance as a rich source of history for India. In accordance with the recommendations of the ‘Mukherjee Committee,’ a variety of new courses were subsequently introduced, including electrical engineering in 1935-36 and mechanical engineering in 1880, among others, resulting in IIEST’s relocation to its current location in Shibpur, Howrah in 1880. The college was renamed The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology in 2014 after it was acquired by the Indian government via an act of parliament.
IIEST, Shibpur is the third established engineering college in India; however, based on its graduation year, it is considered to be the second oldest engineering college in India. In 2014, it became the first Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology. In the NIRF 2021 Ranking, the institute placed ninth in the Architecture category and twenty-seventh in the Engineering category. The institute is ranked 46th in the 2021 NIRF general category. The institute achieved the 48th position in the research category of the NIRF 2021 ranking. Due to its long history, the institution has a large family consisting of 8 schools and 16 departments with a total of 250 teaching personnel and more than 4000 students. There are nine multi-seated hostels for boys, five single-seated hostels for boys named Richardson Hall, MacDonald Hall, Sen Hall, Sengupta Hall, and Wolfenden Hall, and three single and multi-seated hostels for girls named Sister Nivedita Ladies Hostel, Pandya Hall, and Lt. William Hall of Residence.
3. Canteen, Eateries, and Food Court – The campus has many options for food enthusiasts. The campus provides a variety of drinks and food, including Café Coffee Day and Nestle that serve coffee and other snacks, a ladies canteen that serves vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals for girls, a Mother Dairy ice cream parlour, a separate Faculty canteen, another nest-in café that serves vegetarian and non-vegetarian snacks, and a students canteen beside the student shop that sells all the necessary stationery items.
4. Medical facilities — The institute is well-known for the numerous facilities it provides, including medical facilities. The college hospital serves students and inmates with qualified medical officers and staff and provides an ambulance service for emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The option of outdoor treatment is also accessible, except on Saturdays and Sundays, as serious cases are frequently moved to other hospitals in the city with which the facility has ties. The hospital also includes a special ID Ward for isolating students or employees with contagious diseases in order to protect others. 5. Diverse Sports Grounds and Facilities — The institute provides a range of facilities for various sports and is home to more than 2,000 athletic aficionados. Lord’s ground is accessible for all types of games, including night tournaments, and acts as the location for the institute’s Convocation Ceremony and REBECA (college fest). In addition to the Oval ground, which is used for intercollegiate and intracollegiate cricket and football competitions, the college features a basketball court, swimming pool for swimming and water polo, table tennis, chess, a well-developed gymnasium, volleyball court, badminton court, and many more. The college encourages the athletic development of its students and hosts numerous tournaments, including cricket and football competitions.
6. Promotion of entrepreneurial activities – The college has partnered with Tagore Centre for Green Technology Business Incubation (TCGTBI), a society registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 that fosters future entrepreneurs by promoting various innovations and transforming them into actual devices or assistance for society. The TCGTBI provides physical, technical, and networking assistance to college-aged entrepreneurs and promotes their products for societal benefit.
7. Computer labs – Currently, the institute has two computer labs, Laboratory-I and Laboratory-II, each containing 30 computers connected to a central server LAN for faster operation and working by students, faculty, and staff. The real computer lab is now undergoing renovations and will have upgraded and expanded amenities upon completion. The institute also provides students short-term programming training.
8. Guest House – The institute also has a guest house for accommodating guests, student’s parents/legal guardians for greater convenience. The guest house contains 10 double-bed A.C. rooms and 2 single-bed A.C. rooms with other amenities.
